Summary of Frankenstein: The film Frankenstein is based on Mary Shellys novel. It was set in 19th century. At that time, the science was advancing. So for the whole film, science is an important part. The technology which Victor uses also affects religion. So religion is a major theme throughout the film. Because of his mother died. Victor starts to be absorbed in bringing the dead back to life.
The great experiment that Victor is going to do is creating a creature. Unfortunately, he created a monster. It was made up from the remains of corpses. The creature escapes into a wood to avoid being attacked by village people and teaches himself to read and feel like a human. The ugly, repulsive monster leads to the death of Victors brother. The monster is dying for the love from Victor, but Victor cant give him love because Victor is afraid of him. The creature asks for a female companion. But the mad monster cant control him and rips out Elizabeths heart on the wedding day of her and Victor. So that Victor is almost insane over the loss of his love. Eventually, Frankenstein finishes his tale and dies and the creature setting Frankensteins funeral pyre on fire and drifting off on an ice floe.
Creation of man and life: Victor creates the creature by putting together from the materials of corpses. He sews the materials together and puts into the water. And then he uses electricity to make it live. On Victor and Elizabeths wedding day, the monster kills Elizabeth and takes out her heart. Victor loses his wits. He assembles a female with the body of Justine and Elizabeths head and brings her to life. Victor is just a common person.
He creates life by himself. He has a deep influence of religion. As we know, life is a gift from God. It is created by God. If a man creates a man, he is ridiculing religion. Victor never thinks about God. Life has a special relationship with God. Christians believe God is always a part of life and human do not have right to do what they like with human life. Life is also holy in Islam. God grants life and human can never control it. In a word, the way that Victor does takes God out of the picture.
Death: Nowadays, science is developed. Though the technology is much better than before, the ability of human is still limited. For todays science, we cant be confident to say we can do the experiment like Victor. Victor uses corpses, cuts up certain parts, sews them together and creates a life by the use of electric currents. And giving life to a dead corpse exceeds our powers as well. In the film Frankenstein, death is just like a game. People died, but Victor can bring life to them. In religious theme, human dont have right to do anything with life. Human dont have right to do with death either. If you did, that went against religion and God.
Christians think after death nothing happens, but at a time in the future the dead will be brought back to life. Human have a body and a soul which survives death and after death goes to a spiritual place where God is. People will have resurrection and be immortality of the soul; those are under Gods control. But God gives it a body as he has determined¦So it will be with the resurrection of the dead. (1 Corinthians 15:38, 42) Muslims believe in immortality of the soul and resurrection. Human cant make any decisions about death. Allah will decide what happens to people after death and his decision is final. God will judge all people in the future, so do Allah. Allah will also judge all believers, not just Muslims.
Evil and suffering: Victor is devastated by the death of his mother at childbirth. Victor does not accept the death of his mother and feels sadness and a lot of pain when she dies; he suffers and grieves over her loss. Although he has suffering because of his mothers death, Victor is an absolute evil. He wants to bring life to his mother. He was obsessed with creating life. He uses many materials from dead people and creates a creature. He didnt make sure the materials from good people or bad people. After he creates the monster, he doesnt give any love to the creature. Victor never cares for the monster. Then the monster becomes crazy and suffers.
He is extremely sad. Christians say the real ruler of this world is Satan the Devil. Mankind are imperfect when we first come to this world, because of the things happened in the Eden. In a world without Jehovah as a protective Ruler, people may suffer because they happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. But Christians believe that God does not cause suffering. He is not responsible for the wars, the crimes, the oppression, or even the natural disasters that cause people to suffer. But we know God is the Almighty, he has the power to stop it. The loving God that we have come to know must have a good reason.
In Islam, the word Islam means submission. Many Muslims understand that to include suffering enduring pain or loss is a way of submitting to the will of Allah. Some suffering is Satans doing or is the work of his cohorts in the spirit world and is allowed by Allah as a test of humility and faith. Allah allows some people to suffer in order to test their patience and steadfastness. When you see a person who is sick, poor and needy, then you are tested by Allah. Allah is there with that suffering person to test your charity and your faith. As a word, humans shouldnt say God gives us suffering. The way to the success is full of difficulties. The only thing we can do is using your intelligence to choose the right way. We should be optimistic, brave and tough to face up the sadness or suffering.
The film Frankenstein is a science fiction and horror film. Maybe many people think it is unrealistic. In fact, the science is being developed everyday. In the 21st century, we even have clone. In my view, the purpose for the writer (Mary Shelley) of this story is reminding people this might be happened in the days of near future. It is a serious problem people need to think about. The film was against God. All humans are created by God. Human beings shouldnt create life by themselves. The film Frankenstein is not just a horror film used for entertainment. It makes us think about life, death and resurrection.
