What exactly does the term peace mean? There is no solid answer because everyone has a different response, so let me define them. The word peace can be referred to many definitions and images when we think of the word. For example, we think of the peace symbol, the hand gesture (index and middle finger), and hippies. Peace, in my opinion, means to not cause trouble, because of disagreements, cessation of hatred or disturbance, and the mindset of tranquility.

One definition for peace is that it is a way to end war or conflicts. The majority of most wars end with a peace treaty, a document to end the war but with some agreements. The Treaty of Versailles is a great example for this type of definition for peace, because it ended World War I in 1919. The nations that were involved with the signing of the peace treaty, at the Paris Peace Conference, were between the Allied Powers (United States of America, United Kingdom, and France) and Germany. The treaty established a set of terms in four different sections: territorial, military, finance, and general. According to a website article, Germany had to give land back to France, Belgium, Denmark, and Poland. I remembered covering in history class that Germanys military was reduced to 100,000 soldiers, few battleships, no tanks, and no air force. They also had to pay reparations for all the war damages, and take full responsibility for commencing the war. According to a website article, the western part of Germany was to become a buffer (demilitarized) zone, because France is a neighbor country to Germany, and was also prohibited to unite with Austria.

The last term of the treaty was to set up a League of Nations in order maintain world peace. Secondly, the term peace also refers to the mindset of being tranquil. Yoga for example, helps the individual reduce stress and become tranquil. Yoga is, a method adopted from Asia, to help the individual be tranquil by doing exercise. I have not tried yoga, but my sister has and states that yoga helps her out whenever she was stressed or doing sets of exercises before she would perform ballet. Another example would be music, because depending on the type of music to the individual it can be relaxing. For example, whenever I get upset or annoyed, I will play classical music, because it helps me become calm, allows me to concentrate better, and feel mellow for the rest of the day. In my opinion, the types of music that can be considered peaceful would be classical music or songs that dont contain vocals or the vocals are soft.

A final illustration for this term would be nature, because seeing landscapes and hearing the noise of the outdoors can help someone become calm. As I remember from Mexico, I enjoyed watching the landscapes from the car window when driving to one town to the other. I always enjoy hiking on the summer, because it is so quiet that it is relaxing and seeing landscapes or animals in their natural habitat as helps. Even watching landscapes from any location or even pictures from the internet can also help. Lastly, peace can be a definition for a cessation of hatred or disturbance. Pacifism is a term that means opposition to war or violence on any type. Gandhi is an example of a non-violence movement, because he guided India to independence without the use of violence.

Another known person is Martin Luther King Jr. as he fought back racial inequality by non-violence. According to a website article, the Nobel Peace Prize is awarded to people that promote peace between nations and prevented possible conflicts or ended conflicts. When someone thinks of the word pacifist they may immediately think of hippies, because they are known to not be violent. There are many symbols that represent peace such as the hand gesture (V-hand), the olive branch, and the logo (circle with a line in the middle and a triangle at the bottom).

When someone uses one of the following symbols it means that they are against war and promote world peace. Peace, in general, is a term of getting along with the environment. Those are the three types of definitions when someone says peace or what the symbols of peace mean. If one is annoyed then they should try the options to become tranquil such as doing yoga, hearing relaxing music, and seeing nature. The world would be a better place when one promotes peace, as the good ole saying goes an eye for an eye makes the whole world blind.
