The main legislation that covers the protection of children is the Children Act 1989 then was updated in 2004, the Children Act 1989 (2004) is to safeguard children in learning environments. In a nursery I would safeguard children by locking gates and knowing who is meant to pick them up from nursery or school.
Legislation is the Education Act 2002 this lays out the responsibilities of Local Education Authorities (LEAs), governing bodies, head teachers and all those working in schools to make sure that children are safe and free from harm.
Policies that safeguard children
School must provide policies that safeguard children. Schools have to ensure that the building has security and security cameras. These policies will set out the staff responsibilities and procedures they must follow. Policies may be different in in a different setting but they must all include: Safeguarding and protecting, and procedures for reporting
Bullying, including cyber-bullying.
Department of Education
The department for education (DFE) provides a set of rule for local authorities to follow including schools. Schools use this as a guidance to develop and make their own polices, which must be followed.
Working to safeguard children (2004)
This is a guidance which explain the duties of bodies and how they must work together to safeguard children and young people. What to do if youre worried that a child is being abused (2006) This is guidance to support those working with children safeguard and encourage their welfare.
There are five main principles that are to do with Every Child Matters.

The ISA stands for Independent Safeguarding Authority, the ISA or a society that is involved in safeguarding and welfare of children and young people. The ISA stops unsuitable people from working with children they also carry out CRB checks for people that want to work with children young people. In an Early Years Setting there are requirements that are set out by the EYFS curriculum for workers to follow. The EYFS says that children are at their healthiest when safe and secure also when their individuals needs are met also when they have a positive relationships with the adults taking care of them.
Workers must take steps to keep children safe and well. Workers must; safeguard children, promote good health, manage behaviour and maintain records of policies and procedures. All schools have the same policies for the EYFS but child-minders are required to have policies and procedures but not in writing but they should be able to explain it to parents/carers and others. (For example Ofsted inspectors) or any other assistants.
Workers must be notified about the child life at home or elsewhere providers are meant to have implement policy and procedures to safeguard children. A care practitioner is designated to have a responsibility to safeguard children. Child-minders take this responsibility by themselves. The supervisor of the setting is responsible for liaison with local statutory childrens services agencies, and with the LSCB. They give advice and support to staff.
