Apple has improved Mac OS X severally from 10. 0 -10. 5 betas to date while Microsoft took a long time to upgrade from Windows XP to Vista. Macintosh is an excellent operating system that is considerably more secure than and free from unwanted background processing and analytical tools that use applications. Mac OS X I is very efficient with uncompelled font superb functionality and requires minimal maintenance (Coursey 2003). The problem of lack of hardware support for Mac OS X has been removed by introduction of hardware interface such as firewire and USB.
Initially, hardware like scanners, used to have different hardware interfaces such as SCSI and serial connections which required production of drivers for specific operating system. The introduction common standard has made it possible for Mac OS X to operate on all devices. Users of Windows support that it is the most efficient operating system due to its compatibility with almost all hardware and software. In addition, Windows provides the best customized business applications. Windows 7 offers alternative gaming operations and where gaming is a major consideration for users Windows provides the best operating system.
Mac OSX is more stable than Windows since Apple has a higher degree of control of over hardware configuration resulting to a generally more stable product. Both OSXs S UNX base that had been under improvement for a longer time than Windows and UNIX security model result to a more stable operating system. On security issues OSX is more secure from virus and spyware attacks. With regards to security issues, Windows XP is much targeted for malware than Macintosh. Due to the configuration of Windows, when a malware gets into the computer, it does more damage and its difficult to remove than in Macintosh.
This makes Windows less stable than Macintosh. The major strength of Apple lies with its content production. Since most users use computers to create something new, OSX provides the necessary features and programs for creating content the Windows. Mac OSX most bands use features such as Pro Tools to create music and every print is created with Adobe Photoshop and most video are produced with Final Ct on Macintosh OS. Mac OS X can start a cold boot within 25 seconds on the latest gen MacBook Pro.
In spite of all its advantages, Macintosh OS, is more expensive than Windows and provides less support to hardware problems. In addition, Macintosh OS, offers few hardware choices as compared to Windows such as scanners and cameras. Furthermore, OSX is more complex due to its UNIX base than Windows, thus making it less understanding to the end user. Rebooting Windows takes a much time and is a painful experience and most users can delay the reboot de to the long time it takes (Lee 2006). The choice of the operating system depends on the end user and the purpose f the computer.
Both Macintosh OS and Windows have varying pros and cons including security, trouble shooting, user interface and hardware support and complexity to the end user, therefore the computer user needs t select the operating system based on their requirements. Budgetary strains can also influence the choice of which operating system to use since both Windows and Macintosh differ in cost. References Coursey, D. (2003).
